One of the most iconic figures in Art Deco is the above poster titled "Symphony in Black" by Erté.
Romain de Tirtoff (November 23, 1892 – April 21, 1990) was a Russian born, French artist and designer known by the pseudonym Erté, a French pronunciation of initials R.T. Tirtoff was born as Roman Petrov de Tyrtov in St. Petersburg, Russian Empire in a very distinguished family with roots traced back to 1548.
Despite his father's objections, Erte wanted to work in costume and set design. Hence, he designed for such Hollywood films as Ben-Hur, The Mystic, Time, The Comedian, and Dance Madness.
Erté is perhaps most famous for his elegant fashion designs which capture the art deco period in which he worked. His delicate figures and sophisticated, glamorous designs are instantly recognizable, and his ideas and art still influence fashion into the 21st century.
By far, his best known image is Symphony in Black, depicting a tall, slender woman draped in black holding a thin black dog on a leash. The influential image has been reproduced and copied countless times.
This is the ORIGINAL FIRST PRINTING of this poster designed by the famous Deco artist Erté. Printed in 1978, it advertises a showing of his work at the Rizzoli Gallery in NYC.
As one of his more popular image, this poster is particularly RARE. It measures 24 1/2 x 38 inches, and it is in A- condition (very minor wear at edges). Note: This is NOT a reproduction.
